The Mars Prize is the brainchild of Kevin Davis. Kevin joined 1000Planets, Inc. in 2002.

1000 Planets, Inc incubated the Mars prize as part of the Marsopolis Chamber Of Commerce until the United Space Development Team was established.

The start of this project was announced on February 1, 2003.

The Marsopolis Chamber Of Commerce was reorganized into United Space Development Team in June 2004

USDT is a membership organization established to promote the private volunteer space effort.
